WHAT IS BS BIOTECHNOLOGY?

Biotechnology is the application of scientific and engineering principals to the processing of material by biological agents to deliver goods and services. Since biotechnology has become an integral part of modern science, hence, BS in biotechnology is a door to many career opportunities in Pakistan. Our program takes a research and informatics centric approach to provide greater understanding and knowledge. Students will develop skills in practical laboratory techniques, data interpretation, critical analysis, computational skills allied to biotechnology and scientific writing. At NIU, students will gain extensive practical skills in a research-oriented environment so that they are prepared to work at the forefront of developments in this exciting field. The graduates of the program are likely to get jobs in pharmaceutical companies, chemical industries, research and academic institutes.

Bachelor in Biotechnology program at NIU is designed to equip the students with the fundamental training in basic scientific principles as well as in specific concepts, techniques, and applications used in biotechnology. The curriculum stretches to the frontiers of contemporary developments in the field of Biotechnology and the offered courses provide students with extensive exposure to basic Biochemistry, as well as Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biochemical Engineering and Clinical & Industrial Biochemistry. This program has the following vital components: research-oriented environment, state of the art campus, highly qualified faculty, highly equipped laboratory and HEC recognized degree.

The objectives of the Department are according to our national plans to progress the field of science and especially Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The focus based on research areas that have a practical application in Medical, Industry, and Agriculture. The Department looks forward to set-up academic collaborations with other institutes and organizations for research projects.

It complements the fields like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food and Nutrition, Pharmacology and even Medicine and Dentistry. Without any doubt, this field is very interesting to study because it almost covers all the major fields of biology. This field has tremendous scope of research.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Applicants who have successfully completed one of the following:

  • 12 years of formal education: F.Sc. /A level or Equivalent Education with Biology and Chemistry
  • Minimum 45% Marks at Intermediate Level or Equivalent
  • Equivalence certificate from IBCC in case of O/A Level

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree will be awarded as per HEC Criteria after the successful completion of respective credit hours.
  • Students will be required to have CGPA of 2.00 at the time of graduation.
  • The degree program fulfills all the curriculum requirements per HEC criteria, comprising of Compulsory, General, Foundation, Major and Elective Courses.
  • The basic training in Research work and Thesis / Review Report is also imparted during last year of degrees.
