WHAT IS BS MEDICAL LAB TECHNOLOGY?
Medical Laboratory Technology is a profession that combines the challenges and rewards of medicine with laboratory science. Medical Laboratory Technologists perform complex and varied laboratory analyses, and use critical thinking skills in determining the accuracy and validity of test results. They recognize the interdependency of testing information and possess the knowledge of physiologic and pathologic conditions affecting results in order to support medical decisions. In diverse health care settings, clinical laboratory scientists provide test results used by such practitioners as physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians’ assistants, in determining: the presence, extent, and causes of disease; monitoring therapy; and evaluating testing protocols to insure optimum and safe public health applications.
WHY AT NIU?
The Medical Laboratory Technology Department at NUR International University and Fatima Memorial Hospital has contributed greatly to the country’s catalogue of Applied Healthcare Education. It has nourished not only the education sector where leading scholars are provided to various public and private sector universities and medical colleges in Pakistan but also delivered expert Medical Technologists to the developing healthcare industry with high standards of skilled and holistic approach. Our faculty holds impressive credentials from leading international universities and includes acclaimed experts and scholars with significant publications to their credit, and continue to advance within their respective research interests.
At NIU, MLT graduates will obtain the skills that includes developing and establishing procedures for collecting, processing and analyzing biological specimens with Standard Protocols and Quality Assurance to provide best healthcare practices. They are provided modern techniques of classroom teaching, on-desk practical training and supervised clinical rotation to understand the operation of complex electronic instruments to analyze blood, body fluids and other substances for the presence of normal, abnormal, and malignant chemical components and cells, in addition to prepare blood for transfusion and match proper blood donor to recipient; screen, evaluate and monitor transplantation patients, perform and validate specialized and complex tests that include Flow- Cytometery, Forensic Testing, Paternity Testing, Cytogenetic and Molecular Probes.
SCOPE
The healthcare industry is in the midst of one of the most significant shortages of trained personnel in its history, and leaders predict this trend will continue. The shortage of laboratory personnel is expected to remain high because in the near future many of the current practitioners will be entering retirement years, and not enough programs exist to meet the needs of the industry. So a greater demand for Medical Technologists, who constitute 60% of working of total healthcare team, will be raised to cater patient care needs.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The graduates of the program may pursue their career as Laboratory Managers, Education Coordinators, College or University Medical Technology Faculty, Laboratory Computer Specialists, Research Laboratory Technologists, Forensic Lab Scientists, Product Specialists or Technical Advisors for Laboratory Equipment or Chemicals etc. In the public sector, they are eligible for direct recruitment in gazetted pay scale (BS-17) in Clinical or Managerial Cadre and BS-18 in Teaching Cadre, after their post-graduation.
