WHAT IS MS ECONOMICS?

This is a 2-year weekend program following the completion of 16 years of education i.e. BS Economics or conventional MA/MSc Economics. Major focus of the program is to provide training and advanced knowledge in the subject of Economics. The program is unique regarding maintaining high quality education offered in the selected areas, in which there is a significant demand in the market. In this way, a significant change in the market will be observed and a vital role in the development of the country will be played.

WHY AT NIU?

The Major focus of MS Economics at NIU is to provide training and advanced knowledge in the subject of Economics. The program is unique regarding maintaining high quality education offered in the selected areas, in which there is a significant demand in the market. The program offered in exceptional due to highly competent faculty members, research opportunities and practical approach towards learning.  MS Weekend programs provide options for students who are unable to attend university during weekdays. It also facilitates students who are doing jobs and wish to attend classes from far areas on weekend only.

 SCOPE

After the completion of MS Program in Economics, students may opt for PhD studies.  MS Economics enhances knowledge of the students that will provide them an edge for competing for job in the market. After completion of MS, a student will have exposure to those courses and skills which are helpful to pursue a doctoral program or enter the teaching/research professions. In the present era, there has been growing demand of economists with Masters and PhD degrees in research organizations. We aim to prepare our students to embark not only in research and teaching careers, but also in direct policymaking organizations and public sector.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The employment opportunities for holding MS Economics are manifolds compared to their current supply. In fact, several vacancies remain unfilled due to lack of incompetent graduates. In the public sector; Ministries of Planning and Development, Finance Division, Labor & Manpower, Economic Affairs, and Industries, Economists and Planners group are looking to hire competent graduates in Economics holding higher degrees. Similarly, research institutes like Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, Punjab Economic Research Institute (PERI), State Bank of Pakistan, Training Institutes in the Public Sector and Applied Economics Research Centers are also continuously looking for high quality workforce with Economics degrees. Beside this, Chambers of Commerce & Industries, international finance institute and similar other institutes are interested to hire such specialists. In the Public sector at Federal level, new service Group named Economic Management Group (EMG) has been created for which there will be a significant demand for Economists in the teaching and research institutes. In brief, there is a wide demand for the above programs. The MS degree is now an entry-level requirement for teaching in universities in Pakistan; MS graduates are also in demand for colleges having Master level programs.

Sixteen years of education with major in Economics/Business Economics/other related fields with at least 2nd division (annual system) or CGPA 2.00 out of 4.00 (semester system); and

  • 50% marks in GAT/GRE/Departmental Entry test will be required for admission

Selection Criteria

  • GAT/GRE/ Departmental Entry test score
  • Interview score
  • Past academic achievements
  • Merit of students will be determined based on weighted aggregation of GAT/GRE/ Departmental Entry test score (30%), interview score (20%) and past academic achievement (50%).

Note

  • Students who are waiting for results can apply provisionally but must submit a complete official transcript at the time of interview.
  • CGPA in the last degree will be counted towards past academic achievements.
  • Candidates who fail in the Departmental Entry test are not eligible to appear in the interview.
