Guest Lecture at NIU on the Topic of “Youth Health and Safety”

The Applied Psychology Department at NIU arranged a guest lecture on the topic of “Youth Health and Safety.” The resource person for the guest lecture was Dr Sarah Shahed, (Director, Women Institute of Leadership and Learning, LCWU). Dr Sarah elaborated the role nutrition plays in women’s reproductive health, she stressed women, especially girls to take healthy diet. She also shared the result of her research study which shows that women/girls who take unhealthy diet are at greater risk for PMS. Dr Sarah mentioned that another very important factor affecting girl’s reproductive health according to her study is stress, which also includes stress related to harassment. She elaborated to the audience what harassment is and what protection the harassment law provides to women at workplace and in public places. She also discussed some strategies to deal with harassment. The session ended with an interactive Q and A session. At the end Dr Ijaz Ahmad (Pro Vice Chancellor, NIU) presented the shield to Dr Sarah Shahed, and thanked her for sparing time out of her busy schedule to come for a guest lecture at NIU.

Anti-Corruption Awareness Seminar and Walk

The Character Building Society (CBS) of NIU organized an “Anti-corruption Awareness Seminar and Walk” on 24th April, 2018. The event started at 1:00 pm with the recitation of the Holy Quran after which Dr Ayesha Sarfaraz (Focal person CBS NIU) informed the students about the role of CBS in creating awareness regarding anti-corruption at educational Institutes. Ms Mahrukh Rashid (Member of CBS NIU) talked about corruption at individual, group and societal level and what role youth can play in eradicating corruption.  The Vice Chancellor NIU, Dr Rakhshanda Rehman, also graced the event with her presence and talked about the ill-effects of corruption at every level and how students can protect themselves from temptations that pave the way for corruption. After the seminar, all the Students, Faculty Members, Deans and Administrative Heads, and the Vice Chancellor of NIU joined the CBS team in the symbolic Anti-Corruption Walk around the campus.

Liaison Between Colleges and Universities

The purpose of the session was to identify the gaps and overcome the problems that students usually face when they enroll into universities and colleges.
Discussion points:
1 University should offer a range of associate programs or short
2 Pre-training sessions (zero semester) should be conducted.
3 Programs should be affordable for students. The university should offer merit based scholarships.
4 Students should be encouraged to choose those programs in which they have interest rather than just considering pre-medical or pre-engineering.
5 Seminars on motivation, grooming, career counseling/awareness should be conducted.
6 Parent’s teacher meeting should be conducted for a proper career counseling of a student.
7 Students should have a clear vision about their ultimate future goals with respect to job facilities and opportunities.
8 Universities should move forward and should tell their requirements to schools and colleges to overcome the problems.
9 University’s Curriculum should be designed in a way that every child should have a grip and knowledge about a particular subject.
10 University should offer all those programs that have high market demand.
11 Quality based research should be set as a way of teaching and studying.

12 Standard should be raised and language barrier should be diminished.
13 Open houses should be conducted after every six months.
14 Marking and grading should start from the very initial level i.e. matric level and it should be added to board marks so students should be aware of the future consequences.

Evidence Based Practice in SLP

Speech and Language Pathology Department organized a guest lecture on “Evidence Based Practice in Speech and Language Pathology” for speech and Language Pathology students.
The speaker for the lecture was Dr. Sikander who is presently working as Assistant Professor at Riphah International University in the department of Speech and Language Pathology.
In this lecture Dr. Sikander discussed the importance of evidence based practices in clinical setting. He also told different types of evidence based practice method that can be used in the clinical setting.
Dr. Sikandar introduced the participants to many exclusive examples regarding EBP methodologies. He shared his own experience regarding clinical practices or how to utilize different evidence in clinical practice. He also advised students to take help from faculty regarding literature evidences for treatment approaches.
At the end of this session Dr. Baber Aziz (Dean of Academics) and Ms. Rabia Azmat (HOD-SLP) presents a shield to Dr. Sikander as token of appreciation
