Department of Clinical Nutrition organized a special lecture on Refined Food and Health on 4th April 2019. The purpose of this special lecture was to create awareness about the effect of eating refined food on wellbeing of individuals.
The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by National Anthem. Prof. Dr. Nighat Bhatty, HOD/ Dean of Applied Sciences delivered the welcome note and thanked the guest speaker, faculty members and students for being present at the event. She also highlighted the serious health issues associated with the intake of refined foods on regular basis.
The key note speaker was Prof. Dr Sakhawat Ali Director General PCSIR (Rtd); he is currently working as a Technical Director at Islamic Food & Nutrition Council of America (Halal Food Association).
Highlights of his lecture were:
- Refined foods have higher caloric content and low nutritive value as compared to fresh foods.
- Impact of eating refined and processed food on health.
- Refined foods are the leading cause of obesity, diabetes mellitus and heart diseases.
- The importance of eating fresh foods.
The session was concluded by Prof. Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi, Co-Chairperson NUR-FMS, he stressed upon the importance of eating healthy food how it will impact our health. Later Prof. Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi presented shield to the guest speaker as a token of appreciation and thanked him for sharing his views on the said topic.
